First year Graphic & Media Design students recently met author and activist Nicholas Mirzoeff.

As part of their Introduction To GMD unit, students have been reading and responding to How To See The World, written by Nicholas and published worldwide by Pelican in 2015. Working in groups of six, the students were asked to design an individual cover and a collective design for the spines, this culminated in a small exhibition of the book jackets where students voted on the best individual cover and spine. It was during this exhibition event that Course Leader, Craig Burston, tweeted images and tagged Nicholas, who responded by suggesting he visit the students while he was in London.

Students were able to ask questions and present their designs to Nick as he signed their individual copies and the afternoon culminated in a selfie with the students holding their book jackets.

When asked how does he know when a book is completed, Nick replied ‘writing never finishes, you just stop’.

Thank you to Nick who gave up his free time to come to LCC today, he was thought-provoking and showed a generosity of spirit that we can all learn from.
