Drowning in Clothes – VR Experience
Kantamanto, in Ghana, is one of the world's biggest second-hand upcycling economies. All of the Global North’s clothing deadstock is sent over there, causing streets to overflow with piles of clothing and creating inhuman living conditions. Its recycling economy is based on backbreaking labour and high financial risks. Children are dying from the weight of clothes they need to carry daily. Due to the overproduction of fashion, upcycling all clothing is impossible, hence clothing is still burned in the open air, ending up in landfill or in the ocean. The idea of giving old clothes away for second-hand and charity shops in the Global North is seen as morally good and as a helpful method to recycle. However, in reality such a concept is naive as there is already too much clothing in the world.
I want to bring awareness to the situation in Kantamanto by targeting people's emotions, recreating the feeling of ‘drowning in clothes’, using VR technology and combining it with the sense of touch.
Food for Thought
A platform where unique experiences about cultural recipes and traditions are shared with the world. Discover how we see food and what it means to us.
Food is essential for our survival. But food offers so much more than just that. Recipes and dishes are an important part of any culture as they can showcase traditions and inform about country’s histories. Food can create sociable connections by bringing multicultural people together. Dishes and recipes can be personalised and create unique experiences within families, between friends and with strangers. This project explores exactly those experiences.
The Role of a Design Manager
Design Management is the ability to come up with an innovative concept to create business value by being analytical and creative. A design manager has the duty to respond to environmental, social and economical challenges, and improve customer experience, yet, help a business to succeed. Due to the importance of satisfying customer needs as well as targeting global issues, the role of a design manager is important to help businesses stay competitive in the market without causing further damage to the planet.
My project aims to convince a business of the importance of a design manager within their company, pitching the role, values and positioning. To visualise that, I focused on a traditional family business and explain the reasons why this business should hire one and how a design manager could benefit them.
