Binary Opposites—‘Modernity’ and ‘Tradition’

I’ve always been intrigued by our inherent collective obsession with nostalgia, and the significance that sentimentality for the past plays on our psyche. To explore the concepts of my opposite words (‘modernity’ and ‘tradition’) I chose to utilise newer mediums—projection mapping on acrylic cutouts, to showcase older media—photos from my grandparents’ wedding.

In Sikh tradition, the ‘Ek Onkar’ (the symbol that the images are projected onto) represents a belief in the oneness of God and humanity. Coming from a Punjabi background, the symbol also personally represents a feeling of familiarity. My intention with this project was to recreate that feeling of familiarity and nostalgia whilst showcasing it from a new perspective.
