Benjamin Hart

A designer from Kent, with an interest in technology, typography and print. Benjamin has a curious eye and is always exploring and pairing unconventional mediums together to produce generative artefacts.

Core – a typeface

This brief came about by accident. It was upon reviewing my childhood handwriting and how illigible it was, the idea suddenly came to me. I used to have to use stencils with letters stamped in. When holding the stencils I wondered if was possible to create a modular typography stencil to complete a full alphabet. My outcomes consist of a 4 spread broadsheet newspaper, printed on Redeem 130gsm 100% recycled Fenner paper, with a Heidelberg Speedmaster SM 74-4. Also, a series of 20 A2 unique screen-printed posters, on 200gsm crushed corn paper displaying my typeface in action.

Outer Sound

The subject of my dissertation investigates the world of digital algorithms. Throughout my research I have learnt about the many derivatives of coding platforms, investigating heavily into generative art. The purpose is to place the viewer into a virtual rave environment. This will be achieved by creating a series of small books which have full page bleed images of artworks made with algorithms. Inspired by Algorave live coding EDM events, the images will be reactive and can be triggered by augmented reality software. This is so the viewer can achieve the full sensation of moving images rather than just still images, thus adopting the name ‘Outer Sound’. The books are inspired by the aesthetics of the 80’s and 90’s rave scene, the fluorescent colouring plays homage to the quintessential rave flyers and posters. The point of this artefact is to celebrate the existing technology, provoking thoughts of the ‘unexplored territories’ of generative art.

Input_Output

This project will be a visual exploration of data and numbers. My goal is to turn the mundane line chart into something visually exciting, yet still hold the same integrity & ease of reading. I figured I would use the oldest and most popular crypto currency, Bitcoin (BTC), as my main target & source of data as it’s the most valuable and let's face it, most ostentatious. The reasoning for choosing this direction for the project is because the crypto market is open 24/7, therefore constantly accessible and with its growing popularity, I want to better my understanding of it. This project will be achieved by exploring various technologies including API’s, curated data and code, with the complete aim to be able to generate different artefacts from a remote source of data, to be displayed in large format in a exhibition / gallery environment.
