Chou Lei Chin (Julie)

Biography

I’m Julie, a creative exploring motion, interaction, and system-based thinking to reflect how technology shapes human perception and connection.

My work often combines motion design, creative coding, and interactive experiences to explore how emotional states can be expressed through minimal forms. I’m particularly interested in adaptive structures, abstract behaviors, and how subtle dynamics can reveal deeper systemic patterns.

Resonance

‘Resonance’ is an interactive installation that explores the transmission of love and connection without words. The piece features two inflatable pillows that communicate in real time, sharing a resonant rhythm through synchronised breathing. As the pillows inflate in harmony, they mimic the act of a hug, creating an emotional connection despite physical distance.

By focusing on the intimate, non-verbal language of touch, this work highlights the power of human connection in a digital age. Through the integration of soft materials and physical computing, the installation invites participants to engage with the tactile sensation of touch, fostering closeness and empathy through the shared experience of a hug.

Climate Story

‘Climate Story’ is a WebVR experience available on both desktop and mobile platforms. Viewers navigate a virtual environment enhanced by immersive background music and personal climate narratives. As they move through the space, they encounter memory fragments, visual elements that shift and distort based on emotional content, offering multiple perspectives on significant climate-related events.

Each fragment captures a powerful moment from the storyteller’s memory, creating a rich, sensory-driven narrative. The sound design is interactive: audio intensifies as users draw nearer, deepening the emotional impact.

Built using A-Frame, this project explores the potential of WebVR to create meaningful, web-based virtual reality experiences. ‘Climate Story’ demonstrates how immersive technology can forge deeper connections between digital content and its audience.

Boundless

‘Boundless’ visualises the philosophical concepts from James Carse’s Finite and Infinite Games by contrasting two distinct mindsets through motion design. Carse‘s philosophy divides life into two types of ‘games’: finite games, which are played to win with clear rules and outcomes, and infinite games, where the objective is to keep the play going, evolving along the way. Using abstract shapes, I simulated two AI players—each embodying a finite or infinite mindset while navigating shared obstacles and choices. The result is a dynamic exploration of how each mindset engages with life’s challenges, symbolising the tension between competition and growth. Through this visual journey, the project seeks to express the fluidity of life and the potential for continuous transformation, encouraging a shift from a fixed, goal-oriented approach to one of open-ended possibility and creativity.
