Hello, I’m Jack Bance and this past year I have been working on developing my skills in editorial design, interactive design, and branding. I did this as these are my main areas of interest and are the skills I hope to use when stepping into employment. When executing my design work I like to use both digital and physical design techniques. I’m looking to go into branding, using it to find my feet as a designer, and then go into a more specific type of design like publication or exhibition design.

Gems in the Rough

Following the Mainstage brief, I set out to create a series of outcomes that as a collective would be used as branding. “Gems in the Rough” was what I came up with. This would act as a film festival, with the objective of uncovering underappreciated cinema that deserves more recognition.

To achieve this I used a blend of generative and interactive design with the backdrop of a set editorial and typographical layout to tie it all together. Using the tearing as an act of revealing something you didn’t once see. For me I used these techniques to go beyond just visual consumption, to create a small physical experience where the consumer leaves with something, making the advertising more effective.

The Evolution of Social Change

Creating a 9000 - word essay on the evaluation of social change was the final section of the Cultural & Theoretical Studies unit I had been taking throughout my time at university. I chose to cover the topic of social change as it is what has shaped our society into what it is today.

When gathering research I kept the narrative of collecting both sides of the story. This was to give me a full picture, where I could then give a more educated stance on the questions and themes I was covering.

Exploring the themes of consent change, instability, and imperfection. Demonstrating how they are constantly changing and evolving. Some stages present themselves to be flatter, fairer, and more desirable but it’s always changing and is never perfect.

SIP – Captioned Eyes

When creating my custom brief I looked back at a previous project where I looked into creative coding, as I saw this as an opportunity to revive and continue developing my skills.

With this project, I wanted to explore how people express emotions through their eyes. Taking this with a literal approach I created a set of collages covering the emotions of sadness, anger, confusion. To bring this idea to life I chose to do creative coding, for this I used the p5.js editor as it works with a simple language and was tailor-made for designers.
