Matej Siska

Biography

Hi, my name is Matej Siska, and I’m a multidisciplinary artist/designer currently based in London. My work is a blend of 2D, 3D, motion, and sound. The subjects of my investigation mainly include architecture, ecology, sustainability, materials, and graphic design. These interests often collide and are reflected in my work. I frequently experiment with various technologies to explore new possibilities in visual communication. A principal part of my practice is collaboration because I enjoy sharing knowledge and merging diverse skills and perspectives.

Morphing Lands

A visual response to my ongoing research about the negative impact of mining. As we know, the mining industry creates uninhabitable locations through acidification of water, pollution, and other toxic hazards. The impact of material sourcing in this piece is visualised through a formation of artificial shapes and materials, in combination with recognisable natural environments. The mountain here is decomposing its natural properties and transforming into a more toxic environment. Further away from the extraction source, we can see the impact on the climate, which extends far beyond the mining area. The scale and form of these artificial shapes are my abstract translation of how, through the never-ending expansion of mining sites, nature and its surroundings slowly change into new forms, which will soon become unrecognisable to our current perception of nature.

Generate (The Flow)

This project was a collaboration between Louis Philpot-Dodds and myself.

Our system is a simplified translation of a node-based visual programming language. It is visualised through a physical sculpture of a pipe system, where certain parts are covered by screens, each playing a different render interpreting the pipe. There will be 5 screens in total, each associated with a different simulation.

Closed Loop

The project investigates product design in connection with material pollution. By sourcing HDPE plastics from used milk bottles, I aimed to create long-lasting products that could potentially close the recycling loop. The clothes hanger is the first in the series of products.
