Biography

Hello, I'm Suting Chen. I am a 3D artist, currently based in London. My areas of interest include 3D, motion, and speculative design.

According to my observations, the use of 3D in graphic design, advertising, and fashion is becoming more and more popular today. This got me thinking about whether this is the main way of expressing visual communication in the future. I believe the future of graphic is a combination of multimedia and interdisciplinary collaboration.

For me, I’m not content with making realistic 3D visuals. At the same time I also hope that my work, like a Renaissance oil painting, does not only record and reflect the current era, but can also critique thinking about society, the future, technology and so on. I want to put all my passion, time and energy into this field.

visible and invisible

In this project, I created an experimental 3D animation exploring the visualization of rhythms and making experimental sounds.

I observed, felt and experimented with the boundaries of sound visualization. After exploring painting, photography and materials, I applied these elements to the 3D models I created. During the creative process, my understanding of rhythm gradually shifted from 2D to 3D. The variety of motion forms and the exploration of space and structure are the main directions I focused on.

I paid special attention to my sound design. I combined the content of the animation with my understanding of the material’s sound properties. I also designed the left and right channel changes to give the audience a more immersive visual and auditory experience.

What a human will look like if we evolved to survive under water.

In this project, I critically think about the possibility of human evolution in the future. Human life under the sea is my main direction. By studying the evolutionary history of humans and marine animals, I have come to realize the importance of the environment for individual change. In addition, I also experimented with 3D modelling software, especially zbrush. During the production process, I thought more about my characters.

By understanding the relationship between human bones and muscles, it helps me to systematically gain knowledge of the character’s body structure. I conceived the timeline as a logical way of establishing a set worldview. Based on this information, I did a matte painting to simulate the scene where the character’s story takes place.

At present, the character design of this project is still in production, and the final outcome is a naked character. After that I will also design clothing to express their culture.

Anxiety

In this project I explored the relationship between body and fabric. I tried to use contemporary body performance to express emotions. My outcome is an abstract video to express the visualization of anxiety.

During the development of the project, I found a great interest in materials. Due to the different properties of materials, I found many ingenious and unexpected visual effects in the interaction between fabrics, props and bodies in the process of experimentation

In addition, I also tried dance, which broke my thinking about the inherent movement trajectory of limbs. It was this attempt that allowed me to have more imaginative and expressive variety in the control of my body’s performance.

The design of the clothing is to visualize the inner emotions and wrap the whole body tightly. I used a variety of materials and different winding methods of yarn to express the ups and downs of emotions and the tangled thought-pulling.

Overall, this project is a whole new challenge for me. I am very fortunate that I have the courage to try completely unknown territory, meanwhile it has helped me broaden my new definition of creative thinking about visual language. In the future, I need to better plan what to perform on camera and how to tell the story.
