Tia Jordan-White

Hi, I’m Tia a London based graphic designer specialising in social and illustration design. The focus of my work is through the commitment of designing for real life issues that need addressing. Design has the power to change and educate many on societal issues that are often dismissed. Through the use of design, I am able to engage with different communities in order to provide a solution to a problem that can make a difference.

As social issues can be very sensitive, I like to approach these topics through a change of perspective and a sense of humour that addresses the audience with a colloquial and uplifting tone. A well as this, I like introducing the idea of games and activities to create a sense of fun to relate to my target audience. I am interested in exploring other areas of social design that don’t just rely on campaign work but installations and active community work that tackles complex issues.

Girls with Pearls Workshop

Girls with Pearls is a self-initiated project created for the Industry Practice Unit. As a sufferer of PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) I understand the stigma and mistreatment from doctors when it comes to being diagnosed with the condition. Therefore, I created a workshop experience proposal for women aged 16-22 where women can feel safe and comfortable in talking about their experience.

The focus of this workshop is aimed at those who have just been diagnosed with PCOS and want to know what it means. Through fun activities and games women are able to divide fact from myth and learn how their bodies function as well as be surrounded by a community that share similar experiences. As this is a sensitive topic, I approached this project with care but also acknowledged the target audience’s age to be able to relate to them with a colloquial tone and aspects of humour. The result of this meant that I was able to turn a topic that can be quite dark into something that young women can be comfortable expressing their views about.

PCOS Care Package

Many women who are diagnosed with PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) are given no advice on how to help or manage the symptoms of their condition. Due to this I created this care package as an extension of my Industry Practice unit. This packaged box includes information for women who want to know what their diagnoses means as well as stickers and a guide, which contains the risks and causes of the condition and advice, alongside a period and symptoms tracker.

The effects of PCOS mean that many women often avoid exercise as it can be upsetting. Therefore, yoga cards are included in this box as a form of a low intensity exercise. The cards have been created with the use of illustration and an uplifting tone in order to take the focus off losing weight and emphasise improving physical health. Through a positive tone this box aims to reassure women about PCOS and give back confidence that may have been lost.

Take a Piece, Share the Road.

Take a Piece, Share the Road is a road safety campaign created as a response to a client brief. Hard Edge Agency and several other industry partners set a brief as part of their React campaign that focuses on changing behaviours on the road. This campaign is aimed as 18–25-year-olds to emphasise the idea of community and positive behaviour through acknowledging vulnerable road users and shared responsibility.

The approach to this brief was in collaboration with another student, where our concept focuses on the idea of perception in order to remove the behaviour of tribal mentality. Through the use of puzzles, we created a campaign that uses the idea of a puzzle piece as a metaphor to portray what happens when each road user doesn’t take their share of responsibility. By changing the perception of a topic that can be considered dark to something that is fun, we were able to relate to the Gen Z target audience in a way that is innovative and interactive through the use of live posters and social media apps such as Instagram and Snapchat. We all share a piece of the road!
