Toby Hung

Biography

Hello, I’m Toby from Hong Kong. I am a multidisciplinary graphic designer, passionate about visual communication, particularly publication design, brand identity, data visualisation and animation. My works are often influenced by my surroundings and revealing my inner-self. I will continue my exploration in visual communication and graphic design after my graduation.

3+4=17

3+4=17 is an experimental publication set that records my presence, in a pure abstract dimension. The equation, 3+4=17, defined the shapes reconstructing the moments. The set is combined with three separate publications, a guide, a coloured book of my home, and my daily journey. I re-engaged my surroundings and my daily journeys, defining the shapes and dimensions that build up the realistic world and recording them with abstraction.

4, primary shapes that forge all other shapes geometrically. 3, cut on each shape, regarding the time I spent collecting pictures of my surroundings. 17, shapes born from the equation, abstracting my surroundings.

MIND

MIND is a website that I created by P5.js, transforming my mind into a code-based generative art model. The project visualised how my MIND is popping out random ideas, floating and fading out, time by time. When facing pressures, the ideas became trapped, looping and exploding. The model differentiates time and the switch of pressures, the only variables in the whole model. And the MIND itself is a rotating box that moves on its own.

The nature of the coding, generative art and the MIND are fairly the same, mysterious and random, in which the randomness is somehow controllable, but only indirectly behind a set of directions, commands and patterns. In this project, I attempted to demonstrate such commands in a simple approach.

Green2036

Green2036 is a social media page that illustrates today's energy grid, along with the issues and a brief introduction to renewable green energy. Green2036 is a research-based project on the topic of 'climate change, 'energy supply' and 'energy pattens', while also promoting and raising attention to these topics. The project aims to communicate visually so that the information is condensed and reconstructed. Presented in isometric illustration style and simple graphs, limiting the complexity, while transforming the heavy information into elementary visuals and reducing the importance of the texts.

To strengthen its approachability and interaction, I turned the page's feed into a 9x9 isometric landscape, which conveys the information into a little 'treasure map', inspired by the Christmas advent calendar gift box, engaging the viewers to determine both informative posts and decorative posts, easing the information's heaviness further.
