Wanrui Ren

Biography

I’m Rui, a Chinese girl growing up with strong characteristics. I am the kind of creator who would like to express my passion and emotions through the language of art to the world. There is some certain kind of beauty that art is able to accomplish by making people feel and think. I used to always wanting to solve problems in the society by raising people’s awareness doing posters or designing app interfaces. Then I realized that my power is not strong enough yet. Instead, I chose to consider from my own angle; illustrating my experience and knowledge; putting it on the table; making it into works of art then presenting, so that people can see; can relate; can resonate and feel what I am trying to express. It's been so far so good.

Experiencing growth

This project illustrates a traditional Chinese family’s life in the form of a picture-story book. Starting from the inspiration of parenting license as an influence by tragic news of children suffering and irresponsible parents, then slowly progressing into children’s education and family members’ characteristics. I realised that trying to solve the parenting issue by introducing policy is controversial and beyond my reach, I decided to draw some little stories from my own family so that people can reflect their thoughts by looking at other families’ situations. The aim is for family members to try to understand each others' mindset through my drawings. The audience doesn't have any restrictions considering it is a little and colourful piece of work. My own family values are presented in this storybook, with characteristics of the family members and myself. I hope this can provide an interesting new angle when it comes to family education and problems for other people around the world.

I accidentally ruining my computer just before a deadline. My father drove me to a cyber cafe and I delivered it in time. There's so many other outcomes in different households. There's no need to yell at your children for their mistakes, sometimes just help a little.

My mother wants me to improve my grades by working hard in the winter holiday while all I want to do is to have fun. We came to an agreement with each other by balancing the time of work and entertainment. You don't always have to argue when it comes to different opinions.

My brother painted on one of of my mother’s expensive dresses. I had to tell her what happened and make my brother take accountability. She was mad but still explained to my brother about the mistake that he made.

My family gathers together to go out every weekend. When it's sunny we go out for a picnic in the mountains, we spend some quality time together enjoying the food and the views. Then we recorded this moment by taking selfies.

This is a handmade and hand-drawn storybook. It's simple but also complicated as there's so many stories going on inside. I left the drawings not coloured for my readers to engage with the experience by imagining the characters of their own.
