The final outcome of interpolate is an A3 risography printed zine. It explores the space between freedom and restraint, legal and illegal.
The zine uses Boston Ivy as the main character, and make it have a little talk. At the beginning of the story, humans watered it with love and expectation, and the Boston Ivy thought humans would appreciate how beautiful they grow, and they grow in a different but unique way. However, humans don’t like that, he/she wants everything to grow as he/she expected, so the humans just destroy the lovely Boston Ivy. At the end of the story, the audience can only see the trace of its feet, and the human is saying, “what should I grow next?”
The story is a reflection of the Shanghai blank paper protest which took place last year. The younger generation were asked to grow freely, so they can be whoever they want. Ironically, when the younger generation try to speak for themselves, wanting to defend for people’s rights, they were arrested, and forced to shut up.
The characteristic of Boston Ivy is its feet would suck on the wall when it’s growing (climbing up the wall). People can pull down the feet, but the trace left by the feet would always be there. I used this as a metaphor that reveals the truth behind the blank paper protest. People in the country cannot grow freely, they would always be forced to be what the elder generation has expected. Nevertheless, their efforts, their bravery would always be remembered, like the trace of Boston Ivy’s feet on the wall.
