All I See is this Sound

The experience of sound is much more than waves meeting the ear. It is tactile and textured; an experience that can be felt in your nerve endings.

I wanted to explore the immersive experience of hearing by looking at sound visualisation through the lens of synaesthesia and music design semiology to create powerful images that demonstrate this.

I paired the 30 visuals with crowd sourced fan responses obtained from music database forums and comment sections to capture the emotions evoked when hearing your favourite song.

Room 4010

This set of A3 screen printed graphic scores offer an evocative form of storytelling by presenting a visual extension to the experience of sound.

These graphic scores have been used to narrate and recount the sounds I hear everyday in my room exploring the layers and textures that these create over the day.

I built a contact microphone and recreated the sounds in my room exactly as I heard them, before creating an audio visualiser laser that produced characterised shapes and patterns from the sound vibrations. I then used the sound characteristics to design a set of notation symbols for my abstracted listening score.

The stave for this score was the layout/ floor plan of my room to give each sound its geographical context and was to be read from bottom to top (entrance of my room to the end).
